Now we’re past Halloween and into November I think it’s ok to talk about Christmas gift knitting.
I have decided to make 3 Christmas gift knits this year for 3 important ladies in my life – my Mum, my Nanny and my sister.
First up I’m sharing the socks I knit for my Mum. I wanted to use some sock yarn from my stash and flicked through a book, Socktopus, I have for some inspiration.

I decided that I wanted to create a complex looking lace pair of socks and the pattern for Caretta Caretta (a pair of beaded lace socks) seemed to fit, however I didn’t want to use beads as suggested by the pattern.
Due to the complex nature of the design I wanted to use a plain/muted yarn. I decided to use this sock yarn from Paintbox Yarns, in the Pixel-Sherbets colourway.
It’s got some lovely flecks of orange and yellow against a pale green background.
The first sock knit up relatively quickly and then I hit a hurdle, I just wasn’t enjoying the process of knitting them.
It was the wool, not the pattern, I’ve been spoilt by lovely pure merino wool and even MCN yarn. These were scratchy to knit and made my eyes itch, anyone else get this?
I persevered and finished them and after a soak in Eucalan they have softened up so I’m happy to gift them.
If I’ve learnt something from this project it’s that…
Lovely socks, and so true! I spend a lot on yarn but it’s worth it.
