Baby blankets to crochet

Last year saw a lots of babies born in my work, friend and family circles. Which was great, of course, I had been wanting to crochet some blankets, trying out new techniques but with a recipient planned for each blanket, that was the extra motivation I needed to get started.

Boho stripes baby blanket

Pattern by Michelle Greenberg

This was a really easy blanket to crochet – no counting required so it was easy TV crocheting. I liked the colours used by the designer (and the Mum loves wearing navy and stiped clothes) so I chose similar ones using Emu Classic Chunky yarn. This ended up being quite a big size, almost suitable for a cot bed.

I was told that this baby was going to be a girl so I when I saw this pattern, which came as a kit from The Knitting Network, I thought it would be a perfect pastel rainbow blanket. The Emu Classic DK yarn is so soft, the cream V’s added an interesting pop to the bands of colour which merge beautifully from one colour to the next. The kit contained a ball of each colour which was plenty for this blanket and could partially make another blanket at a later date.

Corner to Corner blanket

I wanted to crochet a corner to corner blanket as the technique is used to crochet graphgans. I thought that it would be best to to start with 1 yarn so I chose this Stylecraft Batik Swirl DK which was on sale at a local yarn shop. I thought I was being sensible in buying 2 cakes, 1 cake to do the increases and 1 cake to do the decreases…..wrong! The 2nd cake ran out with 8 rows to go so I was left with a problem. I didn’t want to buy another cake but the colour pallet was unique to Stylecraft Batik. After putting the blanket in timeout and a bit of research online I discovered that Stylecraft do the batik yarn in single colours too. I bought 1 ball of this in indigo and then ripped back the blanket so that I could do a full colour in the corner of the indigo.

I love the dense fabric of this blanket, it’s perfect for a pram blanket to keep a baby nice and warm. I gifted this blanket to my hairdresser, who is expecting her 1st baby, as these are just her colours.

This blanket was made using DK yarn in my stash. I made it to have some simple TV crocheting on the go. To finish off the blanket I crocheted the last rounds in double crochet. I actually use this as a little lap blanket.

I loved the c2c blanket I crocheted previously so wanted to make another one. This time I used the leftovers from the Sweet dreams Blanket with some white thrown in to make it a full baby blanket size so I didn’t need to buy any more yarn for this. The blanket looks lovely folded over in a pram and depending on what side you fold over gives it a different look. I actually really like the side with the white stipes the best.

So there we go, some of the crochet blankets I have made in recent years.
Do you have a go to pattern you like to use to crochet a baby blanket, or do you prefer to make something else for a baby gift?
